Small groups are important in any organization, especially in churches. Leading small groups, therefore, is a very important skill. To lead small groups effectively, you must know the different types of small groups. Not all small groups are the same. Knowing the type of small group will greatly help you in leading it well. Basically there are two concerns that will determine the kind of small group:

  1. Tasks
  2. Relationships

All small groups have to deal with these two concerns at all times. Whether the group is focusing more on tasks or on relationships will determine what kind of small group it is. Based on this, we can identify four types of small groups:

  1. Simple Group
  2. Task Group
  3. Nurture Group
  4. Team
