Small groups go through various stages in its development. It’s important to understand this in order to lead a small group well. Each stage will have its challenges. There are certain tasks that need to be accomplished to overcome such challenges. By becoming aware of these various stages, and the tasks needed to navigate through them, a small group leader will be able to lead his or her members toward a more successful small group experience. Here are the five important stages of small group development over time.

  1. Forming
  2. Adjusting
  3. Norming
  4. Performing
  5. Reforming

As the small group develops, there will be certain transition signals that would indicate that the small group is moving from one stage to the other. They are also indicators of success for the small group. Here are the signals and/or indicators of small group development.

  1. Coordination
  2. Cooperation
  3. Collaboration
  4. Celebration
